Frequently Asked Questions

Learn How it Works!

what do dietitians do?

Dietitians are the experts to consult when it comes to specific, personalized and evidence-based information and recommendations required.  They translate medical nutrition science into practical, appropriate and affordable food guidelines to help manage your condition or disease or to prevent disease.

How do I make an appointment?

The quickest and easiest way is to click on the link to my booking page and follow the step by step instructions. BOOK NOW

Alternatively, you can send me an email detailing your preferred time (09:00 – 11:00), dates / days (Mon-Fri) sam@lyanawa.com

You are also welcome to give me a call during office hours at 081 203 5510. If I cannot answer, please leave a message or send a text or WhatsApp message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Do I need doctor's referral letter to see a dietitian?

No, you can see a dietitian without consulting your doctor first.  If necessary, the dietitian will encourage you to see your doctor for specific reasons and information.

Can my consultations be claimed from my medical aid?

Yes, the practice is contracted-in with all medical aids except PSEMAS, therefore we claim directly from your medical aid according to the amount of time spent with you face-to-face as well as for the compilation and revision of meal plans and for email or telephonic queries related to medical nutrition therapy.

Please note that there is N$330 co-payment.

Can I bring my husband, wife or partner to my appointment?

Yes, you are welcome to do that.  In fact, I actually recommend it in order to get better insight into the recommendations that would suit you best.  If you both require an individualized meal plan, it is best to book two consecutive appointments to allow enough time to cover all important information.

Do you see patients in the afternoons and over weekends?

Yes, by special arrangement only.

Meet Your Dietitian

Samantha du Toit

I was born in Namibia and have lived here all my life besides the five years in which I studied at the University of Cape Town where I completed a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Psychology and thereafter the 2-year Honours degree in Nutrition and Dietetics.   I have been in private practice in Windhoek since 2007 and consult a variety of clients and patients from young to old for a variety of reasons and medical concerns.  I love working with people, getting a glimpse into their lives and the fact that I can add value to their health and lives.

I have a special interest in obesity prevention and management through a variety of traditional and non-diet approaches depending on what works best for you.  The research in this field is every growing and I love learning more and seeing what works for different types of patients.  I also have a keen interest in the dietary management of digestive diseases.

In my spare time I really enjoy being creative, often through cooking, baking and through other forms of art.  I am a wife, mother and self-employed health professional and therefore understand the many challenges women face in juggling all the balls of life on a daily basis.
